Mary West is a dedicated educator with 11 years of experience in correctional education, currently serving as a Career Development Specialist at Marion Correctional Institution in Florida. Throughout her tenure, Ms. West has made extraordinary contributions in service, significantly impacting the lives and futures of the individuals she serves.
Ms. West's innovative approach includes developing unique learning opportunities, such as connecting inmates with wastewater industry professionals to discuss career paths and creating an "Entrepreneurial Mindset" class. This class, now in its 4th iteration, helps inmates envision and plan for entrepreneurial ventures upon release, fostering a belief in their own potential. Her commitment to creating supportive and enriched learning environment is evident.
Mary is known for being firm but fair, maintaining strong relationships while offering support, acceptance, and grace and broadening her students' ideas of what is possible. She excels at reaching struggling students with empathy and professionalism, while also challenging her brightest students through innovative strategies she has mastered. Her colleagues commend her ability to analyze problems, find viable solutions, and handle administrative work accurately and thoroughly.
Beyond her regular duties, Ms. West actively facilitates pre-release connections with community providers and employers, aiding in job searches and placement activities. She has built fruitful collaborations with volunteers, service providers, administrators, and others to enhance her program's success. Her dedication extends into the community, where she has volunteered for 10 years with the Florida Inmate Dog Obedience (FIDO) Program and 7 years with Marion County Animal Services.
Ms. West's professional growth includes TIER One Certification as a Career Coach, and training in Thinking for a Change, Florida Ready to Work facilitation, and Project 10. Her previous experience includes serving as an ESE Teacher Aide, where she was twice named FDC ESE Teacher Aide of the Year. She has also been recognized twice as Marion Correctional Employee of the Month. In her free time, Ms. West enjoys worldwide travel, cruises, and spending time with her family.
